A Warning About Breast Implants

Most women who undergo surgery for breast implants have the procedure for cosmetic reasons, but for more than fifty thousand women each year breast implants are for reconstruction purposes--in most cases after a woman has had a mastectomy as part of breast cancer treatment. For many women these implants can help provide a stronger sense of self and body image. but many are facing a new concern. Last week the Food and Drug Administration announced that saline and silicone implants have been linked to a very rare but potentially aggressive form of cancer called anaplastic large cell lymphoma. The key word is rare--this form of cancer is extremely rare, but any type of link with cancer (especially for those who have dealt with it) can be stressful. The most important take home message is that if you have implants this is something you should keep in the back of your mind and, at least, discuss with your physician. It also is important taht this risk--even though it is small, be discussed with every woman who is thinking about getting implants.
