Cancer and The Hard Facts

For the first time in ten years, there are fewer people dying of cancer. According to a new study, researchers looked at the top 15 cancers found in men and women and discovered that the rates are decreased for men and women by .8% from the years 1999 to 2005. This decline is due largely to decreases in the three most common cancers in men; that's lung, colorectal, and prostate, and the two most common cancers in women; breast and colorectal. Despite the overall trend, there are still certain cancers that have increased. In men, kidney, liver, esophagus, certain lymphomas, and melanoma have all increased. In women, kidney, lung, thyroid, pancreas, bladder, brain, melanoma, certain lymphomas and leukemia have increased. Variations in smoking influence cancer rates as well. California, which has strong tobacco control, saw twice that big of a drop in cancer.

The "Wonders" of Pomegranate

The pomegranate is one of the earliest cultivated fruits. Historical evidence suggests that man first began planting pomegranate trees sometime between 4000 B.C.E and 3000 B.C.
I don't know if you have noticed but over the past five years this fruit or the juice it produces has been linked to everything from fighting cancer to preventing heart disease. Go to a cocktail party and you might hear someone saying that a martini can actually be healthy if you add pomegranate. I bring up pomegranate because it is the so called fruit dujour. As is the case with many of these so called remedies for our ills the truth lies in some basic facts that have been dramatically enhanced and largely taken as truth without sufficient support from studies. Pomegranate has some potential health benefits. We know that antioxidant properties can help the heart and deal with inflammation, but if your true goal is better health I think we all would agree reaching for a glass of water beats a martini every time. But, don't be surprised if we start to see a number of new studies focusing on pomegranate.

Is Green Tea Healthy For You

Green tea has been used for centuries as a cure for all types of ills. One of the biggest claims by those who endorse green tea is that it helps fight cancer. But, studies have not supported those claims over the years. What the studies do support is the fact that drinking green tea actually helps reduce the chances of developing a wide variety of problems including heart disease. Tea in various forms can help people relax and in many cultures is associated with rest time. The average American drinks 155 cups of tea each year. The good news is that tea is relatively safe although I would be concerned about products sold as tea extract in pill form. For more, go to http://www.mymedicalreports.com/.

Sunburn

Okay!!! If you listen to my reports around the country on radio or check them out on www.mymedicalreports.com, you know that I had at least a dozen warnings for the weekend including not overdoing it with alcohol, the importance of seat belts and the need to be safe in the sun.
So, while on a short trip to the grocery store I bumped into three people who looked like Maine lobsters. If you are feeling the pain, you have my sympathies. A little aloe might help, but I am more concerned about the long term damage. Each time you overdo it you increase the risk of skin cancer down the road. If this won't stop you.....realize that you also increase the rapidity which your skin will age. The summer is just starting.......use common sense. Limit exposure and try the sunblock. Check us out on www.mymedicalreports.com for more.
